Internet, once considered a luxury, has become an essential part of our daily lives. Today, a reliable internet service is nearly as important as other basic utilities, with students, remote workers, online gamers, streamers, and businesses relying on fast and stable broadband connections for their daily activities.
Previously, in many parts of the US, cable internet was very common. But now, with technological advancements, people are shifting to new broadband services because of the problems associated with cable internet.
In this article, I will be discussing the latest broadband technologies that are available in the US, so that before signing up for a contract, you know what you will be getting.
So, without wasting any time, let's get started!
Hybrid-Fiber-Coaxial (HFC)
Hybrid-Fiber-Coaxial is an internet and TV technology that uses fiber optic cables and copper coaxial cables. We can say that it is a mixture of cable and fiber internet that offers high-speed connectivity.
The way they both work is very interesting and very important for users to know, since they should know that the service they are using, what is happening in its backend.
So, the internet provider sends the data through fiber optic cables, and the data moves instantly without slowing down. When the data arrives at the local neighborhood station called the optical node, it translates the light signals into electrical signals.
The data is then switched to coaxial cables and is sent to your home through the utility poles or the underground lines.
This is one of the latest internet technologies that is being used in the US, and its best part is that it uses both fiber and coaxial cables to offer connectivity to the user's home. Plus, this is widely available since it uses the same coaxial cables that provide telephone lines to your home.
Many providers in the US, such as Spectrum and Xfinity, use this technology to offer high-speed and reliable connectivity to residential areas.
One of the primary advantages of HFC is its cost-effectiveness. Since building a completely new fiber network requires a lot of investment and technical support. HFC avoids this by using the infrastructure of coaxial cables that are already installed.
Another advantage is that HFC offers more bandwidth and less latency, which means that if you have a big family where multiple users are connected to a single network, they can all work effectively without any lag or buffering.
Wi-Fi 7
Wi-Fi 7 is the latest generation of wireless technology, which is also known as IEEE 802.11be in technical terms. It is a massive upgrade for users who use Wi-Fi every day, as it is designed to handle modern-day homes and businesses where many users can connect to a single network at the same time.
It can work across three different wireless frequencies, such as 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz, which helps in making wireless network faster and more reliable than previous versions like Wi-Fi 6 or 6E.
The biggest advantage of Wi-Fi 7 is its speeds. It can offer 5x more speed than traditional Wi-Fi technologies, which means that users can easily do online activities like online gaming, streaming a video in 4K, and even video calls smoothly, without any lag.
Another main feature that Wi-Fi 7 has is Multi-Link Operation (MLO). In previous Wi-Fi versions, you could only connect to one wireless frequency, but here users can connect to different frequencies at the same time.
Furthermore, it also offers with low latency, which is the time it takes the data to reach from one point to another over a period of time. Low latency, or ping rate, is best for activities like online gaming, streaming high-definition videos, and even video calls. This will avoid lag and buffering during these activities.
Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellite
LEO satellites are among the latest satellite technologies that operate at 1200-1500 miles away from Earth, which is lower than previous satellite technologies.
Since they are too close to Earth, they can see and cover a small area at a time. In my opinion, the previous satellite technologies were not as effective since they used to operate at more than 1500 miles from Earth, which led to slow internet speeds, lag, and buffering, which is totally not recommended for online activities like gaming, video calls, and even remote work.
The best thing about satellite internet is that it offers low latency compared to traditional satellite technologies, plus it also offers high speeds.
Moreover, satellite internet is well known to offer connectivity to areas where traditional broadband cannot reach, which will allow people in rural and underdeveloped areas to have reliable internet access.
Many providers in the US, such as Starlink and Amazon LEO, are offering LEO satellite services. Starlink, which is operated by SpaceX, is the start of the show in this industry, as it is serving residential customers all across the US with speeds ranging from 100 Mbps to 300 Mbps.
Lastly, Amazon is the main upcoming competitor to Starlink. They have begun their testing for commercial use, and residential connectivity is now set to be deployed.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, broadband technology has evolved a lot over time. No one ever imagined that now we can get blazing-fast speeds and we could download heavy games and movies in a few minutes.
Over time, as technology grows, we will see more developments in this industry that will offer convenience to people unlike ever before.
