How is the PlayStation 5 Pro Different from the Slim and Base Variant?

Growing up, I’ve always been loyal to Sony’s PlayStation ever since the PlayStation 1 was released back in 1995. I then went on to purchase the upgraded PSOne, then the PS2, and so on until I finally reached the latest in the series, the PlayStation 5.

There is no doubt that the PlayStation 5 has been a breakthrough in the gaming industry, owing much to its futuristic features such as haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, SSD storage, and a lot more.

To take things a notch further, Sony even released a PS5 Pro, which knew no bounds when it came to gaming. Now the question is, how does the PS5 Pro differ from the PS5 Slim, and is the Pro variant really worth the purchase? Let’s find out.

PlayStation 5 Slim

If you’ve ever tried playing on the regular PS5, you might remember that it was a hefty console that took up a lot of space.

However, Sony did gamers a favor once it released the PS5 Slim, which was a more streamlined version of the console that came with a choice of either having a disc drive or just a digital edition (which you can add a disc drive to as well).

Here are some things they changed in the Slim version, making it better than the base variant of the PS5:

  • A Compact Design: In contrast to the base variant, the Slim version is physically around 30% smaller and has a 24% weight reduction, making it easier to fit into places.
  • Greater Storage Space: Compared to the original 825 GB of SSD space, Sony amped up the storage capacity by bumping it up to a full 1 TB in the Slim version. This gives gamers more room to store their games.
  • Improved Face Plates: With the base variant, the console featured two continuous face plates that you could change to other colors. However, with the Slim version, Sony now features four removable face plates instead of two, which makes it easier for you to access the internal disc drive.
  • Detachable Disc Drive: Sony now gives you more autonomy over your gaming preferences, especially if you change your mind after getting a digital edition for yourself. It now has a detachable disc drive, which you can add to your Digital Edition to turn it into a Disc Edition down the line.
  • Better Port Configuration: The Slim version now features two USB-C type ports instead of the regular one USB-C and one USB-A type port. This gives you access to a Hi-Speed and a SuperSpeed port, improving your gaming experience.

PlayStation 5 Pro

If you think the PS5 Slim is great, you’ll be glad to know that Sony made further improvements in the PS5 Pro as well, which made the console better in terms of graphics processing, storage capacity, and even made online gaming a breeze, provided that you connected your console to a reliable internet service.

I’ve always lived in California, and I’m glad that Los Angeles has some great internet options when it comes to gaming. If you’re in the city too, I recommend that you look into providers offering internet service in Los Angeles so that you can make the most out of your online gaming experience.

Circling back to the PS5 Pro, here are some salient improvements that Sony made to the console, which make it worth buying:

  • AI Upscaling: The PS5 Pro introduced a new feature called the PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), which is an upscaler that uses the power of AI to sharpen the image details in your game without having to sacrifice the game’s performance. This ensures that you get to experience the peak resolution when you play your favorite games.
  • Better Graphics Processing: The console has a further upgraded GPU, which offers 67% more computational power than the PS5 Slim. Not only that, but it also gives 45% faster rendering of graphics, too, ensuring crisp details as you play. Having this feature ensures smooth 60 fps or 120 fps frame rates.
  • Improved Ray Tracing: The PS5 Pro doubles or even triples the ray-tracing capabilities of the console as compared to the Slim, so that you have more realistic shadows, lighting, and even reflections.
  • More Storage Capacity: With the PS5 Pro, Sony gave gamers a 2 TB SSD from the 1 TB, which is more than enough to even store the heftiest of games on your console at the same time. This gives you all the more reason to consider getting a PS5 Pro for yourself if you wish to make the most out of your gaming experience.

Now that you know how the PS5 Pro sets itself apart from the PS5 Slim, it is up to you to see which one suits your gaming needs the most. I recommend getting a Pro since it is a better investment in the long run.
